Full Form of WAP

Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) is a technical standard for accessing information over a mobile wireless network. A WAP browser is a web browser for mobile devices such as mobile phones (called cellular phones in some contries) that uses the protocol.

[WAP] is the worldwide standard for providing Internet communications and advanced telephony services on phones, pagers, personal digital assistants and other wireless terminals - WAP forums.

WAP is a wireless application protocol. The definitions of these words are as follows -

  1. Wireless - Wires or cables for radio transmission are not required or required.
  2. Application - A computer program or computer software designed to perform a specific task.
  3. Protocol - A set of technical rules on how to transmit and receive information using computers.

WAP is a set of rules that control data transmission and reception on wireless devices such as mobile phones or through computer applications. WAP allows wireless devices to access specially crafted pages from the Internet using plain text and very simple black-and-white images.

WAP is a standard technique for cross-platform, distributed distributed computing with the Internet combination of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), except that it is optimized:

  1. Low performance efficiency
  2. Less memory
  3. Low-bandwidth devices such as personal digital assistants (PDAs), wireless phones and pagers.

WAP is made up of a wide range of wireless networks, such as GSM, IS-95, IS-136, and PDC.

Who's behind WAP?

Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) is a result of the combined efforts of companies joining the industry group, the WAP Forum (www.wapfor.org).

On June 26, 1997, Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia and Unified Planet began to rapidly create a standard to transform advanced services in the wireless domain into reality. In December 1997, the WAP Forum was officially created and after the release of the WAP 1.0 specifications in April 1998, the WAP Forum membership was open to all.

The WAP Forum now has over 500 members and represents over 95 percent of the global handset market. Companies like Nokia, Motorola and Ericsson are all members of this platform.

The platform aims to create an unlicensed standard that brings information and telephony services to wireless devices.

Why is WAP important?

Until the first WAP devices emerged, the Internet was the Internet and the mobile phone was the mobile phone. You can surf the net, do serious research, or enjoy the Internet using your computer, but this is limited to your computer.

Now with the existence of WAP, we have a wide range of Internet information, communication and data sources that are easily accessible to anyone with a mobile phone or communication device.

WAP is open and secure, adapting to a wide variety of applications including but not limited to stock market information, weather forecasts, enterprise data and games.

Despite the common misconception, only a few changes to existing web applications are necessary to develop WAP applications. Current web application development tools can easily support WAP development and more development tools will be announced in the future.

WAP Microbrowser

You need a web browser to browse the standard internet site. The only way to browse WAP is to start a website, you need a micro browser. A micro browser is a small piece of software that demands minimal amount of hardware, memory and CPU. It displays information written in a restricted mark-up language called WML. However, the memory footprint is small so it supports many features and so does the script.

Today, all WAP enabled mobile phones or PDAs are equipped with these micro browsers so you can make full use of WAP technology.
